It's exam results season and today, thousands of A-Level students will be receiving the results that may well be the basis of their future careers. However, research published this week by the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has found that formal qualifications are no longer enough to guarantee employment.
Personneltoday has reported that “micro-businesses” (those with fewer than 10 employees) are suffering from restrictive growth due to difficulties recruiting the right people.
The research conducted by the BCC has found that 55% of micro-businesses are currently seeking (and struggling) to increase their employee numbers. Almost half (47%) of respondents stated that they would not feel confident with employing school leavers with A-Levels or equivalent. Only 22% felt school leavers would have the necessary skills set for their business. The results also showed that just 36% of respondents felt fairly confident that recent graduates would be suitable for the positions.
The research from the BCC provides an insight as to what these companies are looking for. Improving your skills through experience is key if you want to be considered a valuable candidate. Try volunteering to develop your transferrable skills, and work experience will demonstrate initiative as well as improving your chances of securing an interview.
